From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Bobby Gurney (born October 13, 1907-April 14, 1994) was arguably the greatest football forward of his era, and a fine ambassador for his sport.
Born in Silksworth, Sunderland, he went on to make 388 league appearances for Sunderland A.F.C., scoring 228 goals. He won a First Division Championship medal in 1936, but his finest moment was probably scoring in a 3-1 FA Cup final win over Preston North End at Wembley in 1937.
Incredibly, he only won one international cap, representing England against Scotland at Hampden Park before 129,693 spectators.
