From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Justin Fashanu (February 19, 1961 – May 2, 1998) was an English footballer. He was a skilful and very talented forward who never fully lived up to his potential before his career went into a swift decline.
Together with his younger brother John, who also became a major British footballer, he spent most of his childhood in foster care. He made his professional football debut at Norwich City in 1979, and subsequently became Britain's first £1m black footballer when he transferred to Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest in 1981.
His career stalled as his relationship with Brian Clough deteriorated; Clough, it would seem, was disturbed by the rumours of Justin Fashanu's visits to gay nightclubs and bars. A knee injury also played a role in curtailing his career, although he did later have brief spells with clubs such as Manchester City and Newcastle United.
In 1990, he became the first prominent player in English football to come out as a homosexual.
He committed suicide in 1998, in Shoreditch, London. In his suicide note, he cited the fact that he felt that he would be unfairly pre-judged as guilty of allegations that he had abused a teenage boy in America, where he had been working as a coach following his retirement from the professional game.
