Profile of Alec Chamberlain on Famous Like Me

Alec Chamberlain (born June 20th 1964) is a goalkeeper in the English football leagues. He has now made 783 appearances during his 25-year career, since starting at Colchester United, before signing for Everton. However, the 41-year old was unable to displace goalkeeping legend, Neville Southall, who is still playing at the age of 47. Realising that he would never be a regular, Chamberlain signed for a number of teams, including rivals Luton Town, where he became a fan favourite, and player of the season twice.

Sunderland saw this, and decided to sign him for their premiership campaign where again, he became a favourite for his performance levels. In the summer of 1996, Watford paid £40,000 for him as they had just been relegated. He started off, unable to get in the team, but finally played when Watford legend keeper, Kevin Miller, was sold to Crystal Palace for a £1,000,000. Now he was able to play every game. In the playoff semi-final in 1999 against Birmingham City, he made a stunning save to deny Birmingham a winning goal, and won the match for Watford with his penalty shootout saves. Chamberlain was in the team which then beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0, thanks to an amazing overhead kick.

During the Premiership campaign, Chamberlain started off with an injury, and had to wait six games before he could play again. However, he made some mistakes, as the defence was always being torn open by the higher level teams, and was dropped for a month because of his form. Since relegation, he has impressed, when needed. He also received his first ever red card for handball outside the area. Chamberlain aims for 800 appearances, before becoming a goalkeeping coach.
