John David Penrose (born June 22, 1964) is the Conservative MP for Weston-Super-Mare. He was elected in the 2005 general election, winning the seat from the Liberal Democrats. John Penrose is a publisher by trade, and married to the Tesco Executive, the Hon. Dido Harding. He had previously contested Weston-super-Mare unsuccesfully in 2001, and Ealing Southall in 1997. His 2005 General Election promises were the following:
- Fewer drug addicts and more Police
- Lower Taxes and higher pensions
- Disciplined schools
- Bigger hospital with more GPs
- A better local environment
Criticisms
Some criticism was levelled at Penrose during the 2005 General Election, for the unfulfillable nature of his electoral promises, which are require executive powers not within the remit of a Parliamentarian. His controversial anti-drugs campaign also drew claims of hypocricy, as in 2000 Penrose confessed to having smoked cannabis in his youth.
