From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Paul Vanderlinde-Abernathy (born May 31, 1985 in Malden, Massachusetts, USA) is a singer-songwriter. He lived in Beverly, Massachusetts until he was three years old, then his family moved to Barre, Vermont. He has lived in Barre, Vermont ever since. In the fourth grade he started learning how to play the trumpet and piano. To this day he still plays the trumpet and piano. By the age of 12 he was writing my own music on the piano that didn't have lyrics. He didn't start playing the acoustic guitar until he was 13 years old. He had heard a recording of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds both playing their acoustic guitars, and that made him want to start learning how to play. Just before he was 14 years old he started writing songs with lyrics on the guitar. It wasn't until he was 17 years old that he decided to invest more interest in songwriting, and he started taking songwriting lessons from Colin McCaffrey, a graduate of the Berklee School of Music. He also started playing in any open mics and other venues he could get into around Vermont. His first year after high school he went to the University of Southern Maine and ended up dropping out. He came back home and worked as a music teacher at Barre Town Elementary and Middle School, the school he went to growing up. He worked with children in grades K through 8. The next year he was headed on his way to the Berklee School of Music to major in songwriting, but instead decided to attend Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. Some of the many musicians that have had an influence on Paul are James Taylor, the Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Billy Joel, Jars of Clay, and many others.
