At the age of eight, he started playing piano. Soon after picked up the guitar. In high school, he and friend Mitch James started a band called The Nothing. They added drummer Brian Geiger and DJ Tony Byroads and renamed the band Sugardaddy Superstar. Sloan went to college at the University of South Carolina, majoring in computer programming. The band was signed by Columbia Records and renamed itself Crossfade.
