Park Chan-wook is a South Korean director and screenwriter born August 23, 1963. He grew up in Seoul and studied philosophy at the Sogang University. Whilst there, he started a club called the 'Film Gang' and published a number of studies on contemporary cinema. After graduating, he embarked on a career as a movie critic, before becoming an assistant director in 1988 on Yu Yeong-Jin's "Kkamdong" and Kwak Jae-yong's "A Sketch of a Rainy Day".
His directorial debut was 1992's The Moon Is... the Sun's Dream. His recent movie, Oldboy won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
