From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Richard J. Huggett is a British man who prompted the Registration of Political Parties Act 1998.
He stood in the European Parliament Election, 1994 under the party name 'Literal Democrat'. The Liberal Democrats blamed him for splitting their vote and losing them the seat, which they claimed was a 'family feud'.
He stood in the 1997 general election for Winchester under the same label. The narrowness of this result (a majority of two for Liberal Democrat Mark Oaten) led to a by-election, which he again contested.
Attempted court action by the Liberal Democrats showed that there was nothing illegal in this. As a result of this the Registration of Political Parties Act 1998 was passed, making a register, and allowing the registrar to forbid confusingly similar names.
