From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Spencer Haywood (born April 22, 1949 in Silver City, Mississippi) is a former pro basketball player. Despite a spectacular college career at University of Detroit, Haywood decided to turn pro after his sophomore year (1969). NBA rules, which required a player to wait until his class graduates, prohibited him from entering the league. Thus, he joined the Denver Rockets of the ABA. He was named MVP in his rookie season (1969-70), becoming the youngest ever at the age of 21. In 1970, after forcing his way into the League through legal action, he joined the Seattle SuperSonics. In 1972 and 1973, while averaging 26ppg/12rpg and 29ppg/12rpg respectively, he was named All-NBA-First-Team. Surprisingly (because he was only 24) Haywood's performance declined in the following years. In 1975 the Sonics traded him to the New York Knicks, where he teamed with Bob McAdoo. Haywood later played for the New Orleans Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers, and Washington Bullets.
He was previously married to Iman, David Bowie's present wife.
