Matt Brown is the current Secretary of State, of Rhode Island, he is a Democrat. Brown has announced that he will be a candidate for U.S Senate in 2006. He is one of two Democrats vying for his party's nomination, the other is former State Attorney General and failed 2002 Gubernatorial Candidate Sheldon Whitehouse. He is currently lagging behind Whitehouse for the Democratic Nomination, in pre primary polling as of August 2005. Brown is lagging mainly because of the fact that Whithouse has most of the major Democratic Organazation backing. In recently polls Brown and Whitehouse are both behind incumbent Republican U.S Senator Lincoln Chafee for the general election to be held in November 2006.
