From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia George Arliss was born in London as George Augustus Andrewes on 10 April 1868 and died on 5 February 1946. He was a British actor, who began on the stage. Arliss began his film career with The Devil in 1921, followed by Disraeli. He remade Disraeli in 1929 (and won the Academy Award for Best Actor ), converting from a silent film star to the talkies.
He appeared in several historical films, such as Alexander Hamilton, Voltaire and Cardinal Richelieu. He often appeared with his wife Florence Arliss and their son Leslie Arliss became a prolific producer-director for the Gainsborough Studios, with such films as Love Story (1944) and The Wicked Lady (1945).
Arliss published two volumes of autobiography: Up the Years from Bloomsbury (1927) and My Ten Years in the Studios (1940).
