From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia George Morrell was a Scottish football manager. He was manager of Woolwich Arsenal from 1908 to 1915, and was in charge of the team during its move from Plumstead in south east London, to its current home at Arsenal Stadium, Highbury, and its subsequent renaming to "Arsenal". Although in his first season he helped the team finish 6th in the League, the club fell into debt in later years and had to sell many of its best players. He holds the dubious distinction of being the only Arsenal manager to have overseen a relegation; Woolwich Arsenal dropped from the First Division to the Second after finishing bottom in 1913. In 1915, Morrell's Arsenal finished 5th in the Second Division, high enough to get them elected back into the expanded First Division, when competition resumed after the conclusion of World War One; however, Wolves and Barnsley had finished higher without promotion. Arsenal's return to the First Division appears to have been mainly thanks to political machinations by their chairman, Henry Norris, rather than their performance.
