Born in 1977, Alex McAulay is the author of "Bad Girls", which was released in June 2005 by MTV/Pocket Books, and is soon to become a film from MTV/Paramount. Under the name "Charles Douglas" he has made a string of strange, indie-rock albums, including one produced by Maureen Tucker of The Velvet Underground, and another featuring the guitar-playing of Joey Santiago from The Pixies. No.6/Caroline Records also released several albums of low-fi home recordings he made in his basement. Despite low sales, "Charles Douglas" has attracted a cult following, including some well-known fans, both in America and in the U.K. However, and somewhat inexplicably, Alex refuses to ever play live, and often pretends he is not Charles Douglas, claiming it's his identical twin brother (Alex does indeed have an identical twin, named William, who is not a musician and currently lives in Cornwall.) Information from The Internet Movie Database (IMDB.com) also indicates that Alex directed an unreleased Dogme film for Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg in 2001, titled "Dogme 26: The Sparkle Room." The film is profiled in the 2003 book "Dogme Uncut: The Gang that Took on Hollywood" by Jack Stevenson. Alex appears in a photo in the book, in disguise. Alex has also made albums with Indian actor and musician Manish Kalvakota, and appears on a recent They Might Be Giants Tribute Album alongside Frank Black and The Wrens.
