Rangeela (1995) is a Hindi movie, a product of the Bollywood film industry. It was directed by Ram Gopal Varma, and starred Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, and Jackie Shroff.
Rangeela was the first Hindi movie with a score composed by South Indian musical director A. R. Rahman. The film features famous playback singer Asha Bhosle, who made something of a comeback singing Rahman's extremely popular music.
Rangeela is considered a landmark in Indian commercial cinema; it features breakthrough performances, a superlative music score and streetwise direction, despite a predictable and weak plot.
Rangeela showed off the talents of principal actors Aamir Khan and Urmila Matondkar. Aamir doffed his "sweet college kid" persona and did a well-researched street urchin; Urmila showed that she could act and dance. Her character was direct, frank, open, and sexy -- a modern girl, not the shy, sweet homebody favored by traditionalists and depicted in so many Bollywood films.
