From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia John Fowles is an English novelist and essayist. He was born on March 31, 1926 in Leigh-on-Sea, a small town in Essex, near London. After attending Bedford School and Oxford University, where he studied French, he taught in France and Greece. The publishing and international success of his first novel, The Collector, has ended his teaching career and started his literary career. Among his other significant works are the novels The Magus and The French Lieutenant's Woman. The Aristos his most well-known non-fiction work, is a collection of philosophical reflections. John Fowles now lives in Lyme Regis, Dorset. Most critics have considered John Fowles as a well reputed forefather of British postmodernism.
