Gamini Fonseka born Sembuge Don Shelton Gamini Fonseka (March 21, 1936 – September 30, 2004) was a Sri Lankan actor, director, songwriter, and politician widely known as "Uncrowned king of Sinhala cinama."

Early life

Gamini began his career as a technician in the earlier films of celebrated director Lester James Pieris.

His stardom and his fame remain unmatched in Sinhala cinema. He played unforgetable roles in the Nidhanaya and Udhumanane amidst his career as a popular Sinhala box office movie star. His Sagarayek Medha was a scathing parody of the seven year (1970-77) rule of Prime Minister Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike.

Having won a large number of awards at local and international film festivals, Mr. Fonseka also acted in several foreign films. He proved a versatile actor who was at ease with art films as well as commercial cinema.

Gamini not only revolutionised the acting style of Sinhala screen, but also worked hard to change attitudes in the industry. He was known to be a man who always spoke his mind. In a career spanning half a century, Gamini acted, directed and produced several remarkable films and composed lyrics before turning to politics.

He was 68 years old. Mr. Fonseka played the leading role Gamperaliya, the first Sinhala film to win an international award. His film Sarungalay was well acclaimed.
