From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Margaret Mahy (born 21 March 1936) is a well-known New Zealand author of children's and young adult books. Many of her books feature fantastic themes common in Fantasy literature, but most of her plots concentrate on human relationships and growing up.
Margaret Mahy was born in Whakatane, New Zealand, in 1936. One of her better-known books is The Haunting, which received the Carnegie Medal of the British Library Association. She has written thirteen novels, including the recent Alchemy in 2002. Among her children's books, A Lion in the Meadow and The Man Whose Mother was a Pirate are considered national classics. For her contributions to children's literature she has been made a member of the Order of New Zealand. She won the 2005 Phoenix Award for her novel The Catalogue of the Universe.
Margaret Mahy currently resides in the South Island of New Zealand.
