From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Edgar Buchanan (born March 20, 1903; died April 4, 1979) was an American actor with a long career in both movies and television, but is probably most familiar as Uncle Joe Carson from the Petticoat Junction and Green Acres television sitcoms of the 1960s. As Uncle Joe "who is moving kinda slow", he took over as proprietor of the Shady Rest Hotel following the death of Bea Benaderet, who had played Kate Bradley.
Born in Humansville, Missouri, he was originally a successful dentist before becoming interested in acting.Among the movies he made were Benji, McLintock!, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Tombstone, the Town Too Tough to Die. Other television shows included Hopalong Cassidy, Judge Roy Bean and The Rifleman.
Buchanan died in Palm Desert, California and was interred in the Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles.
Trivia
Buchanan and one of the other stars of Petticoat Junction appeared together in the movie Benji. The other "star" was none other than Higgins, the unnamed "dog" from the sitcom, who was the star of the movie and a sequel, For The Love of Benji. Higgins was found in an animal shelter and trained by Frank Inn, who also trained Arnold Ziffel (the pig) and all the other animals used on the Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and Green Acres sitcoms.
