From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Mark Sandman was a self made icon in rock and roll.
origin of name
His name stems from his deep passion for dreams and from the personification of the dream-giver--Morpheus. Mark's name is derived from the folklore traditions of the Sandman who brought dreams to sleeping children.
influences
Mark's music has romanticism tendencies yet his scope is much broader. Travelling was one of Sandman's most inspiring activitivies.
Instruments
His main instruments were a unitar--named after the one-stringed instrument in american blues tradition--2 string slide bass, and three string slide bass. Mark would sometimes pair a bass string with one or two guitar strings. Mark fashioned these instruments by hand to create his unique sound.
contributions to music
Mark coined the term low rock to describe the sound of his most popular band, Morphine. Morphine ended in 1999 following the death of Mark Sandman, who suffered a fatal heart attack onstage in Palestrina, Italy. He was 46 years old. The Mark Sandman Music Education Fund was established in order to give children in the Cambridge and Boston area an opportunity to learn musical intruments.
