Peter Glotz

Prof. Dr. Peter Glotz (born March 6, 1939 in Eger, Sudetenland (now in the Czech Republic) - died August 25, 2005 in Zurich, Switzerland) was a German social democrat politician (SPD) and social scientist. His father was German while his mother was Czech. In 1945, his family was expulsed from Bohemia, and they resettled in Franconia. He studied Journalism, Philosophy, Germanistics and Sociology in Munich and Vienna and was 1968 promoted Dr. Phil. The next year he became director of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. He became a member of the Bavarian parliament (Landtag) in 1970, and was then a member of the German parliament from 1972 until 1977. 1974-1977 he was a parliamentary state secretary of the federal minister for education and research. From 1977 until 1981 he was a senator for science and research in the state of Berlin, and became again member of the parliament in 1983, resigning in 1996. 1981-1987 he was secretary general of the SPD. Peter Glotz became then director of the University of Erfurt and professor for communication sciences, and from January 2000 until his death was a Guest Professor for media and society in the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. In 2002, he was a representative of the German Chancellor to the European Convention. With Erika Steinbach, he was chairman of the foundation Centre Against Expulsions.
