From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia David Goodis (1917–1967) was a popular American noir writer.
Biography
Goodis was born in Philadelphia March 2, 1917. He wrote his first novel, Retreat from Oblivion in 1938 and his big break came in 1946 with the publication of Dark Passage, which was made into a film starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. After working in Hollywood for Warner Brothers he returned to his native Philadelphia in 1950 to live with his parents and continue to write paperback novels. He wrote many short stories, film treatments, scripts for radio serials such as Superman, and seventeen novels including Down There a.k.a. Shoot the Piano Player.
Despite the intensely personal nature of Goodis' work and its strong, depressing content, his books were popular, especially in the early 1950s. His 1951 book Cassidy's Girl sold over a million copies. He died in obscurity January 7, 1967.
