"Nescio", Latin for "I don't know", was the pseudonym of the Dutch writer Jan Hendrik Frederik Grönloh, born June 22, 1882 in Amsterdam and died July 25, 1961 in Hilversum, both in the Netherlands. Grönloh was a businessman by profession; as Nescio he is mostly remembered for the three novellas De Uitvreter (The Sponger), Titaantjes (Young Titans) and Dichtertje (little Poet).
He had a cynical way of writing. A master of being very succinct, his emphasis is on what isn't said. To his despair he was unable to write a novel. Short stories seem to remain his forte.
Biography
Works by Nescio
- De Uitvreter, or The Sponger, is about Japi, a bon vivant everybody loves. Good company, yet he is not as materialistic as his newfound friends. Doesn't care about money, so he has none. Doesn't matter, people like him enough to pay for his food and drink. He is not made for work, his person is too delicate, so Japi spends his days in search of ... what? Hereby doing something akin to Zen Buddhism. A tragedy is inevitable.
- Titaantjes, or Young Titans, is about a group of friends that will change the world. Like the Titans from Greek mythology they will stand up to those in power. Naturally life has other plans for them.
- Dichtertje, or Little Poet, is the man who would like to live a truly poetic life. Have romantic affairs and fall from grace. In other words, the life of sex, drugs and Rock and Roll. But at the end of the day he does not fall, he remains decent: out of weakness. Afraid of losing his wife.
