Perhaps most famous for his black sugar-bowl haircut and prominent eyebags, Moe Howard (June 19, 1897 – May 4, 1975)--born Harry Moses Horwitz--was the "leader" of the Three Stooges. The distinctive coiffe came about when he was a boy and cut off his curls with a scissors, producing a ragged shape approximating a helmet.

In many of the shorts they made, he was often portrayed as bullying and domineering the other Stooges, but often ended up being the ultimate victim himself. One of his most popular forms of bullying was his two fingered (simulated) poke in the eye. His other method of keeping the other stooges in line was a slap to the face. Both actions were accompanied by off-screen sound effects, so they appeared much more violent than they were.

In real life, Moe Howard was a kind and sensitive person who was greatly saddened by the loss of his brothers Curly and Shemp at a relatively young age. Through it all, he maintained a sense of humor and comic timing that served him throughout his career and life.

Howard was married to a cousin of magician Harry Houdini, whom he was devoted to for many years.

Wise investments during and after his time with the stooges allowed him to live comfortably well after his carreer in hollywood ended.

In a 2000 TV movie, Moe was played by Paul Ben-Victor.
