From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Kurt Erich Suckert (June 9, 1898 - July 19, 1957), better known by the pseudonym Curzio Malaparte, was an Italian writer and journalist. He was born in Prato of an Italian mother and German father. He fought in World War I and was seriously gassed in a mustard gas attack. He became associated with the Fascists, yet in 1933 he was temporarily exiled to Lipari by Benito Mussolini. Afterwards he built his own island retreat, Casa Malaparte, on Capri designed by Adalberto Libera. During World War II he was sent to cover the war in Russia as a correspondent for Corriere della Sera. He died in Rome of lung cancer, possibly caused by his wartime injury.
