From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia John Hockenberry (b. 4 June 1957) is a paraplegic American correspondent for NBC television. He has won four Emmy awards and three Peabody Awards.
He was born in Dayton, Ohio, and lost the use of his legs in an auto accident at the age of 19. He attended the University of Chicago and the University of Oregon.
He had a fifteen year career in journalism at National Public Radio, where he was a Middle East correspondent , reporting the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and 1992. He also worked for ABC News and before joining Dateline NBC as a correspondent in 1996. He reported the Kosovo War in 1999. His weekly radio commentaries have been heard for the past eight years on the nationally broadcast public radio program The Infinite Mind.
He has written for The New York Times, The New Yorker, I.D., Wired, The Columbia Journalism Review, Details, and The Washington Post. His books include A River Out Of Eden (ISBN 0385721501), Moving Violations: War Zones, Wheelchairs and Declarations of Independence (ISBN 0786881623), and has written online in The Blogs of War.
In 1996 he appeared off-Broadway in his one-man autobiographical play, Spokeman.
He lives in New York and in Massachusetts with his wife and four children (two sets of twins).
