Frank O’Connor (born Michael Francis O'Donovan) (1903 - March 10, 1966) was an Irish author of over 150 works, best known for his short stories and books of memoirs. Born in Cork, Ireland, as an only child, he and his father were often at odds, particularly over his father's abuse of his mother Minnie, alcoholism, and endebtedness.
In 1918 he joined the First Brigade of the Irish Republican Army in its resistance to British rule. After the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 there was a civil war between Nationalists (IRA) and supporters of the treaty.
From the 1930s to the 1960s he was a prolific writer of short stories, poems, plays, and novellas. He also worked as a teacher and had other odd jobs. He had a stroke while teaching at Stanford in 1961, and later died in Dublin, Ireland in 1966.
Many of O'Connor's writings were based on his own life experiences--his character Larry Delaney in particular.
