An Italian actress, Giulietta Masina (born February 22, 1921 in Bologna; died March 23, 1994 in Rome) was married to Federico Fellini from 1943 until his death, and starred in many of his films.
These include:
- Variety Lights (1950)
- The White Sheik (1951)
- La Strada (1954) Oscar (best foreign movie) the role of a rootless person who connects with a circus strongman to survive. This film brought international attention to her.
- Il Bidone (1955) The Swindlers
- Le Notti di Cabiria (1957) Nights of Cabiria, Oscar (best foreign movie) main role as an unhappy prostitute
- Giulietta degli Spiriti (1965) Julliette of the Spirits, woman who sees visions
- Ginger and Fred (1986)
In 1945 Masina and Fellini had a son who survived for only 2 weeks; it was their only child.
Masina died at the age of 73 from cancer in Rome, Italy in 1994, only 5 months after Fellini died.
