Steve Poltz is relatively well known for musically collaborating with Jewel Kilcher in the 1990s and early 2000s. Poltz co-wrote Jewel's hit song "You Were Meant For Me" (which apeared on her 1995 album Pieces of You) and some of her lesser known songs. Many live recordings exist of duets performed by the pair. He often played with Jewel before she became famous in San Diego at local establishments such as the Interchange Coffeehouse and Java Joe's. Poltz has appeared on MTV, and was a guitar player in Jewel's band during her 2000 Spirit World Tour. As a solo artist, he was one of the opening acts of the tour.

His musical style is typically acoustic guitar, somewhat upbeat, with humor filled lyrics. The uniqueness and fun playful nature of his music has earned him a loyal fan base.
