Sherri Martel

Sherri Martel (born Sherri Russell on February 8, 1958 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is a professional wrestler, currently competing on the independent circuit in the United States. As a child, Sherri dreamed of becoming a clown with Ringling Brothers Circus. Instead, she became known as one of the most hated women in professional wrestling history.

Career

Sherri Martel is best known for her time spent in the World Wrestling Federation (1987–1993), where she was known as "Sensational" Sherri, but she began her career in the American Wrestling Association, where she wrestled under the name Sherri Martel. She made her debut in the early 1980s and by 1985 was the AWA Women's champion, defeating Candi Devine. She would trade the title back and forth with Devine, before jumping to the WWF (now WWE) while she was still the AWA Women's champion. In her debut match in the WWF, Martel pinned The Fabulous Moolah to become the WWF Women's Champion, and thus vacated the AWA Women's title.

Sherri reigned as WWF Women's Champion for 15 months, taking on opponents like Debbie Combs, Velvet McIntyre and Desiree Peterson. It was on October 8, 1988 that she was finally defeated for the title by the young fan favorite Rockin' Robin. In the early months of 1988, she portrayed Peggy Sue, the valet of Honky Tonk Man, while appearing as Sherri in the same period (Peggy wore sunglasses and a blond wig, so she was not recognizable). When the WWF phased out its women's division in 1990, Sherri remained with the company and turned her attention to managing male wrestlers.

When she became "Macho King" Randy Savage's manager, she became known as "Sensational Queen" Sherri. When she and Savage parted ways following a career match against The Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania VII in 1991, Sherri became the right hand woman of "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase. She would then go on to manage Shawn Michaels before briefly turning into a fan favorite and feuding with the psychotic Luna Vachon.

Sherri left the WWF in 1993 to attend cosmetology school, but re-emerged in Smoky Mountain Wrestling later that year and feuded with Tammy Sytch. She then joined World Championship Wrestling under the name "Sensuous" Sherri and managed Ric Flair. Her most successful time as a manager was in WCW when she guided the tag team of Harlem Heat to the WCW Tag Team Championship on five occasions.

Sherri disappeared from WCW in 1997 after developing an addiction to prescription pain killers. She was fired by WCW executive Eric Bischoff and told to seek treatment. She overcame her addiction and competed on the independent scene in the United States. In 1998, Sherri made a brief return to WCW for one night, when she attacked Madusa, but lost to her in an impromptu match. She became involved in a relationship with Col. Rob Parker, who was involved with Madusa at the time. Since then, Sherri has continued to work on the independent circuit and in 2001 was awarded the AWA Superstars Women's championship.

Sherri returned to the WWE on the March 24, 2005 episode of SmackDown! as part of the Shawn Michaels/Kurt Angle storyline leading up to WrestleMania 21. There, she sung a parody of Michaels' theme song with Angle. After a montage of Michaels' career, Angle put Sherri in the ankle lock before security came and broke it up.
