Victoria Beckham

Victoria Caroline Beckham (born Victoria Adams, April 17th 1974) is a British popular music singer, who first came to prominence as a member of girl band the Spice Girls. She is also known as Posh Spice, a nickname given to her by the BBC's Top of the Pops magazine, a monthly popular music magazine aimed at teenage girls.

Biography

She was born in the county of Hertfordshire as Victoria Adams. Her parents are Anthony William Adams and Jacqueline Doreen Cannon. She has a younger sister Louise and a younger brother Christian.

Prior to joining the Spice Girls, Adams had worked with a number of music acts, attempting to secure celebrity, but without success. Sometime later her audition tapes for the Spice Girls came into the public domain in which the limits of her vocal talent were revealed.

Adams married the ex-Manchester United and present England and Real Madrid footballer David Beckham, on July 4, 1999, with whom she has three sons: Brooklyn, born March 4, 1999, Romeo, born September 1, 2002, and Cruz, born February 20, 2005 by caesarean section at the Ruber International Hospital in Madrid.

Following the birth of her first child Victoria's weight loss became a topic of much discussion in the British tabloid press. She agreed to appear in adverts for a potato crisp brand but there were claims that she would not actually eat the crisps.

An alleged plot to kidnap Victoria on November 1, 2002, was revealed by the News of the World. The court case against the alleged kidnappers collapsed after the original informant admitted that he "made the whole thing up". In a film titled Kill Posh by the viral filmmaker Asa Bailey Victoria Beckham is depicted first shoplifting clothes before she flees from the shop and gets run over in the street. The film was banned by the Beckhams but is still available online.

Despite being one of the most well-known celebrities in Britain, and having all her music reach the top ten (the only solo spice to do so), Victoria Beckham's career as a solo artist is largely considered to have been a commercial failure. The only Spice Girl not to have had a UK number one single as a solo artist (despite "Out Of Your Mind" was the solo-Spice single with biggest sales in its first week, selling 180,584 copies), she fought unsuccessful, media-driven "chart battles" for the number 1 position with Spiller in 2000 (whose single featured the vocals of Beckham's contemporary and rival Sophie Ellis-Bextor) and Kylie Minogue in 2001. Her debut album reached number 10 in the UK album chart. In support of the Not Such an Innocent Girl single she appeared at Party in the Park in Birmingham sporting a fake lip piercing that attracted much ridicule.

In 2003 she became involved with rap music producer Damon Dash in an attempt to reignite her career. A first single called "Let your head go/ This Groove" (a double A-side) was released in late December 2003 where it hit number 3. This single was a compromise with her manager Simon Fuller, one side being a pop/dance song and the other side a song displaying strong R&B influences. A second single was in the pipeline, but this and other music plans were shelved due possibly to the over-exposure dealt by allegations of marital infidelity levelled at Beckham's husband, David, loss of confidence in the music industry, deciding to take a family holiday in the summer instead, and feeling that fashion would be a more productive field to work in.

In 2004 her happy marriage image suffered when a string of women lined up to claim having had affairs with David, including Rebecca Loos. All were dismissed as "ludicrous", "absurd" and "unsubstantiated" by David Beckham and the Beckhams showed a publicly united front against the allegations. However, Loos maintained that she had not fabricated the allegations, and since the Beckhams took no legal action to disprove them, they have continued to mar the image of the Beckhams as the UK's "golden couple". The British press and public, however, eventually lost interest in the story, and the Beckhams have appeared to continue life as normal.

Autobiography

Victoria Beckham is the subject of an "autobiography", Learning to Fly. The book was the 3rd best selling non-fiction title of 2001, and has been translated into several Asian languages. Ironically, Victoria Beckham told a Spanish journalist in 2005 that she had never read a single book in her entire life, not even her autobiography; according to the Daily Mail, '"I haven't read a book in my life," she said. "I haven't got enough time. I prefer to listen to music, although I do love fashion magazines."' Despite the fact that these words are actually featured in the September 2005 issue of Chic, the Spanish magazine featuring the interview, Victoria says she had been misquoted. In fact, according to a recent interview to sky.com, 'The singer said she had been misquoted earlier this month. "It was an interview I did for a Spanish magazine, and what I said was that I never seem to finish books. I always start them, get distracted, and never seem to get the time to finish - I'm sure all mothers with three boys know what I mean. And as for the cynics who had said I'm jeopardising my boys' future knowledge, don't be so ridiculous. Of course we read books together."'
