From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia

Michael Sheen (born February 2, 1969) is a Welsh actor, mainly known for his stage work. He is often confused with Martin Sheen, but is no relation.

Sheen was born at Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales and brought up in Port Talbot. He joined the National Youth Theatre of Wales at sixteen, and soon established himself as one of the most promising talents on the theatrical scene. His screen appearances include the BBC drama serial, Gallowglass (based on the novel by Ruth Rendell), and the films Wilde (1997) (in which he played Robert Ross) and Mary Reilly. However, he remains primarily a stage actor, having starred in high-profile productions of Henry V, Peer Gynt, The Dresser, Caligula and Look Back in Anger, among others.

After living for a time in the USA with partner Kate Beckinsale, he returned to England after their relationship ended. In 2003, he appeared with Beckinsale in Underworld, and played Tony Blair in the Channel 4 drama, The Deal.

At the Edinburgh Television Festival in August 2004, The Deal director Stephen Frears revealed that he was currently in pre-production of a second feature starring Sheen as Tony Blair. Provisionally titled The Queen and set during the week between the death and funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997, the film is also due to star Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II. It is projected for a release date sometime in 2005.

In the 2005 BAFTA television awards, Sheen was nominated for Best Actor, for his performance in the TV drama, Dirty Filthy Love, in which he played a man with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
