Rhode-Island born actor (christened Joseph Nelson Goucher) who was one of almost 20 children born to an Irish and French-Canadian couple. He appeared on stage for many years. His most famous role was the original 'Tom Wingfield' in the original Broadway production of The Glass Menagerie, opposite Laurette Taylor and Julie Haydon. He produced the play's original Chicago production in 1944, and followed it to Broadway.
He was a supporter of the Irish Republican Army. He was married to the Glasgow, Scotland-born actress/entertainer, Ray Dooley, who almost certainly was also of Irish Catholic extraction. It is not known if they had any children.
