From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Hans Florian Zimmer (born September 12, 1957) is a German composer, best known for composing film scores. He is the head of DreamWorks' music department.
Born in Frankfurt, Zimmer began his musical career playing keyboards and synthesizers with, among others, the bands Ultravox and The Buggles ("Video Killed the Radio Star").
In the 1980s, he started composing and producing sound tracks for movies. His breakthrough came in 1988, with the theme for Rain Man, which was nominated for an Academy Award.
Since then, Zimmer has composed music for many major movies, such as Crimson Tide, The Rock, True Romance, The Peacemaker, Gladiator, The Last Samurai, Thelma and Louise, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Pearl Harbor, The Thin Red Line, Black Hawk Down, Mission: Impossible II and King Arthur. In 1995, he received an Academy Award for Best Original Score for the animated movie The Lion King.
He also recently composed music for the movie Batman Begins (with composer James Newton Howard) and Der kleine Eisbär 2 - Die geheimnisvolle Insel.
Critics of Zimmer have stated that his approach to film scoring is too generic, that he and his stable of Media Ventures composers essentially use the same style to score various films. Supporters counter that if the music is effective in the movie that the ends justify the means.
He recently split with his long-time business partner Jay Rifkin, with whom he cofounded Media Ventures. Rifkin alleges Zimmer sought to start a new company called Remote Control Productions without Rifkin, and that he attempted to bring several composers that worked for MV with him, which would have been a breach of their contracts. The suit also accuses Zimmer of having his scores ghost-written for him and taking the main title credit and the bulk of the fees. The lawsuit is currently pending.
