Profile of Steven Bauer on Famous Like Me

Steven Bauer (born Esteban Echevarria on December 2, 1956) is a Cuban actor.

Born in Cuba in 1956, his family fled to Miami, Florida in 1960 when Esteban was 3 years old. Originally intending to become a musician, he turned to acting while attending at Miami-Dade Community College and then transfered to the University of Miami, where he studied theater. Moving to New York City, Bauer studied under famed acting teacher Stella Adler and appeared in off-Broadway productions. He anglicized his name and took Bauer, the surname of his Jewish grandmother, as his last name.

He was given the substantial role of Manolo Ray in the 1983 movie Scarface, even though at the time he was relatively unknown as an actor. The producers of Scarface were convinced that he was right for the role based on his strong audition, as well as his authentic Cuban background. His powerful and seductive performance drew a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

He married actress Melanie Griffith in May 1982; the couple divorced in 1987. Bauer married Ingrid Anderson in 1989. He has two children: Alexander Bauer, born in 1985, with Griffith, and another son, Dylan, by his second marriage.
