From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia

Anne Tyler (born on October 25, 1941 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist.

Tyler grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, graduated from Duke University and completed graduate work in Russian studies at Columbia University in New York City. Her first novel, If Morning Ever Comes, was published in 1964. Her short stories have been published in The New Yorker, The Saturday Evening Post, Redbook, McCall's, and Harper's.

Her eleventh novel, Breathing Lessons, received the Pulitzer Prize in 1989.

Tyler is considered one of America's finest and most talented writers of her time, adept at creating vivid, memorable characters with whom her readers can easily identify. She addresses issues and describes situations common to everyone.

Surprisingly, despite her prolific output and popularity with readers, only two of her works, The Accidental Tourist (winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award) and A Slipping-Down Life, have been filmed for the big screen.

The film of The Accidental Tourist (1988) starred William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, and Geena Davis in a vividly memorable performance that won her an Academy Award as Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The film of A Slipping-Down Life (1999) starred Lili Taylor and Guy Pearce. It was directed by Toni Kalem.

Three of Tyler's works - Breathing Lessons, Saint Maybe, and Back When We Were Grownups - have been adapted for television presentations on the Hallmark Hall of Fame.

In 1963, Tyler married Iranian psychiatrist/novelist Taghi Mohammad Modarressi, with whom she had two daughters, Tezh and Mitra. Modarressi died in 1997. Tyler resides in Baltimore, Maryland.
