Lynch joined the US Marine Corps at the age of 18 and served for four years, he traveled extensively and saw time at the Cuban Blockade in 1962. In 1963, Lynch married his junior high school sweetheart, Carol.

After leaving the Marines, Lynch and his wife moved to Nebraska and then to Denver, Colorado. At that point, he sold real estate and eventually started to work for the Aurora Fire Department in 1972. He received his Associate of Arts degree from Red Rocks College in Lakewood, Colorado while at the Fire Department.

Lynch received numerous promotions and accolades while at the fire department and eventually reached the rank of captain. He decided to retire in 2002 after 30 years of service. Ever since that time, he and his wife have traveled throughout the world. They have visited India, Tibet, the Himalayas and Annapurna regions of Nepal and in April 2004, Lynch climbed Mt. Huena in Peru.

When he and his wife are not traveling, Lynch volunteers with the Northglenn Urban Renewal Authority and the Northglenn Citizens Affairs Board. He is currently writing a Model Noise Bill for the State of Colorado. Additionally, he is building a jet turbine sport helicopter while also taking flight lessons.

Lynch currently resides in Northglenn, Colorado, with Carol and their 2 children, Jeff and Cynthia.

Jim Lynch participated in Survivor: Guatemala in the fall of 2005 and was part of the Nakum (Yellow buffs on show) tribe.

Lynch appeared to be a good leader at first, but tore a muscle in his arm during a challenge and was voted off in the following tribal council. He spent 3 days on the show. He also passed Sonja Christopher as the oldest castaway ever to be the first person voted out.
