From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Meredith Monk (born November 20, 1942) is an American composer, vocalist, film-maker, and choreographer. While she is one of the earliest artists to practice what is now known as performance art, Monk identifies herself as a composer and folk singer. She is primarily known for her vocal innovations, including a wide range of extended techniques, which she first developed in her solo performances before forming her own ensemble. More recently she composed an opera Atlas which premiered in Houston in 1991.
