From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Joe Morrison was a National Football League football player who played for the New York Giants.
After attending the University of Cincinnati, he was recruited by the Giants, where he played at the positions of running back and wide receiver. He had a long career with the Giants, playing from 1959 to 1972. He holds the Giants' team record for receptions, with 395 catches, from seven different quarterbacks; over his career his plays gained 4,993 yards. His team number, Number 40, has been retired by the Giants.
Joe Morrison was a head coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga, New Mexico, and South Carolina. He's one of the few coaches to never work as an assistant coach. Other than his NFL years, he is best remembered as the head coach at South Carolina. He took the Gamecocks to three bowl games. Two Gator bowls and The Liberty Bowl. In 1984 The Gamecocks had their best season in school history by going 10-2. They were 9-0 and ranked #2 in the country before being upset by Navy. Sadly, Joe Morrison died during the Winter of 1989 from a massive heart attack after playing racquet ball. At the time of his death, he was still the head coach at South Carolina. Many consider him the greatest Gamecock coach of all time.
