Warren Moon - Oilers

Warren Moon (born November 18, 1956 in Los Angeles, California) is a retired American football quarterback who played in the Canadian Football League and the National Football League.

College

In college, he played for the University of Washington Huskies. Moon led the Huskies to a 27-20 win over the University of Michigan in the 1979 Rose Bowl, and was voted MVP for his performance.

Pros

Between the Canadian Football League and the National Football League, Warren Moon recorded a whopping 70,553 yards passing, a professional football record. Even without counting his CFL stats, Moon's numbers are exceptionally high. In his 17 NFL seasons(1984-2000), Moon Completed 3988 passes for 49,325 yards and 291 touchdowns. He added another 1,736 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground.

CFL

Despite his collegiate success, Moon was unable to find employment as a quarterback in the NFL -- many commentators suspect because he is Black. Moon looked north and was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. He and Tom Wilkinson formed a powerful quarterback duo and helped lead the Eskimos to an unprecedented five consecutive Grey Cup victories.

NFL

During his six season tenure in the CFL, teams south of the border took notice. After a bidding war in 1984, Moon was signed by the NFL's Houston Oilers where he would be the starting quarterback for the next ten seasons. He set a franchise record for wins with 70, that stood until Steve McNair broke it in 2004 (Note, all Old Houston Oilers records carried over into the Tennessee Titans books). (Houston's head coach in 1984 was Hugh Campbell, the man who coached Moon in the CFL.) Moon then spent three seasons in Minnesota and two in Seattle before spending two seasons as a backup in Kansas City. Moon retired in 2000 after 23 professional seasons. The 9-time Pro Bowl Quarterback will be eligible for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 along with former Super Bowl MVP Quarterback Troy Aikman, recently deceased 13-time Pro Bowl Defensive Lineman Reggie White, and early 1990's Buffalo Bills stars Running Back Thurman Thomas and Wide-Receiver Andre Reed. Ironically, it was against those very Bills that one of Moon's most ignominious games occurred: Moon quarterbacked the Oilers to a 28-3 lead over the Bills in the first half of a game in the 1993 playoffs, and saw it increase to 35-3 just a few minutes into the third quarter after a touchdown from an interception return, only to suffer the worst collapse by a team in NFL history, eventually losing the game 41-38 in overtime. To be fair, Moon was the greatest practitioner of the Run & Shoot offense, a system that often penalized its own team's defense; therefore, the quick scores generated by Moon's offense indirectly caused the Oilers defense to become tired quickly, which ultimately led to the Bills' miracle comeback. Still, Moon must go down as one of the greatest QB's ever to play the game; his 1988 season is regarded as one of the top years by a quarterback ever.
