Fernando José Torres (born on 20 March 1984 in Madrid, Spain) is a football player. He is nicknamed El Niño (The Child), because of his youth.

Torres made his debut for Atlético de Madrid in 2000. He is the youngest player to play for Atleti, the youngest goalscorer, and the youngest to play for the Spanish national side. Torres is a forward, and wears the number 9 shirt. He is a complete player; strong in the air, quick, skillful with both feet and not physically intimidated. He is currently one of the coveted players in Europe, but it doesn't look like he will move any time soon, as his love for 'los rojiblancos' is well known. As of December 30, 2004, Torres' goal tally for the club stands at an impressive 50.

However, many clubs are rumoured to be interested, with Chelsea and Barcelona leading the chase. It is understood that Mancehster United have already had a multi-million pound bid rejected (it is unknown whether this was in the pre or post-Wayne Rooney signing). José Antonio Reyes recently informed Arsène Wenger of Arsenal that Torres was an essential transfer target, because, having played alongside him, he knows how great he is and Arsenal cannot afford to let him move to their rivals in the Northeast. In the summer of 05 both teams are fighting to sign him with multimillions of pound offers being said to be offered. On September 2, Torres claimed that his club had rejected a £25.9m move for the forward as a back-up move if their bid for Michael Owen had failed.
