William Monahan (born November 3, 1960) is an American screenwriter.

Monahan was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He worked as an editor at now-defunct Spy magazine.

He became better-known after winning the Pushcart Prize for short fiction. His first novel was Light House.

In 2001, his screenplay Tripoli was optioned on spec by 20th Century Fox, and Ridley Scott was attached as director. While Tripoli was still in production, Scott and Monahan worked together on Kingdom of Heaven, which was released in 2005. Tripoli is scheduled for a 2007 release.

There have been rumors that Scott and Monahan will also be teaming on the movie version of the Cormac McCarthy novel Blood Meridian, for Paramount Pictures. The rumors were published in the Hollywood Reporter, and on http://www.cormacmccarthy.com/, the official website of The Cormac McCarthy Appreciation Society.

Monahan also wrote the script for The Departed, a Martin Scorsese film due out in 2006. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg. He also wrote the script for Jurassic Park IV, also due in 2006. John Sayles co-wrote.He's also written the adaptation of the Louis Begley novel Wartime Lies.
