From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Carmen Laforet (1921 - 2004) was a Spanish novelist.
Born in Barcelona, her first and best-known work, Nada (Nothingness in the English version), won the Spanish literary prize the Premio Nadal, and helped revitalize Spanish narrative literature. Set against the backdrop of the privations many Spanish experienced during the period following the Spanish Civil War, Nada on its surface relates the story of the day-to-day life of an adolescent girl named Andrea sent to live with relatives in Barcelona. Beneath the surface lie gritty details of the sordid life of an impoverished family, in which physical and verbal abuse were common, and in which the destruction rendered on the city was an ever-present fact. In the midst of these circumstances, Andrea manages to find friendship, which ultimately provides her with some relief from her circumstances.
Laforet's other works include La isla y los demonios ("The Island and the Demons") (1952) and La mujer nueva ("The New Woman") (1955), and La insolación (1963) ("Sunstroke").
