Ingeborg Hallstein (born 23rd May 1937) is a German opera singer. She studied with her mother Elizabeth Hallstein and debuted in 1956. She concentrated on performing in Europe. In spite of having a very successful stage career, she became still more popular during the 1960s and 1970s when she was featured in many operettas and musical programmes broadcast on German television. This made her very famous outside the world of classical music. Here television appearances included:
- Kalman's film version of "The Circus Princess"
- Strauss' "Viennesse Blood"
- a six episode Tv Special of Lieder with Erik Werba at the piano.
She is widely considered to be one of the most accomplished opera singers of her generation. She was a coloratura soprano, or more specifically an "acuto sfogato" lyric coloratura. She could easily reach the A above the high soprano C.
Repertoire
Her repertoire of operatic roles reveals an artist who had an acute and smart sense of her own musicianship. Her voice remained almost intact up to the end of her career. In spite of the fact that her vocal instrument was small, it was well focused and she was capable of commanding dramatic phrasing and emotional expression. Her most well known roles included many "Operetta" roles like Gabriele in Offenbach's "La Vie Parisiene", Adele in Strauss' "Die Fledermaus" and Frau Fluth in Nicolai's "Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor". In Opera she sang some of the most demanding florid roles, specializing in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Richard Strauss; among her most dazzling roles are Zerbinetta in "Ariadne Auf Naxos", Zaide in "Zaide" and she caused a sensation under Herbert Von Karajan singing the taxing role of The Queen Of The Night in "The Magic Flute".
Recording career
Hallstein was also a prolific recording artist for her time, recording soloist vocal recitals. These recordings display an artist who had an uncanny sense of sophistication as regards ornamentation and a fearless bravura approach to the most daring virtuoso pieces. She was also an accomplished Lieder Singer, and many of her Lieder recitals show a lovely middle range of expressive and kaleidoscopic colours.
Perhaps her most famous and readily available Operatic recording (In a Digital Format) is Ludwig Van Beethoveen's "Fidelio" with Christa Ludwig in the title role, Hallstein playing a coquetish and delightful Marzelline. Most of her soloist recitals and complete Operas never saw any kind of reissue on Compact Disc, and remain Vinyl Rarities; which outside of Germany are extremely difficult to find.
Teaching
During the 1980s Ingeborg Hallstein became a Vocal Professor of high Rank at the Würzburg conservatory, where she continues to teach some of the most promising opera singers in Europe.
Legacy
Ingeborg Hallstein remains one of the most treasured opera stars, due to the fact that she achieved an almost perfect technique; showcasing a crystalline and bird-like high register and performing each of her roles with a fragile delicacy and a sophisticated artistry.
