Na'amah (Hebrew: נעמה, meaning pleasant) is the name of two women and one place in the Bible:

  • In Genesis 4:22 she is mentioned as the daughter of Lamech and Zillah, and the sister of Tubal-Cain, of the line of Cain. If, as some Jewish rabbinical sources state, she married Methuselah of the line of Seth, she would have married her patrilineal parallel cousin, and presumably named their first-born son Lamech after her father.

Sometimes patriarchs, even much later, indeed married their patrilineal parallel cousins: Isaac married Rebekah, and Jacob married Rachel and Leah. However, other authorities state firmly that the lines of Seth and Cain did not mix until the days of Jared, and that the line of Noah remained purely Sethite (without admixture from Cain) throughout.

  • According to 1 Kings 14:21, 31, and 2 Chronicles 12:13, Naamah was an Ammonite wife of King Solomon and the mother of his heir, Rehoboam. She is the only one of Solomon's wives to be mentioned as having had a child.
  • In the Book of Joshua 15:41, Naamah is listed as one of the conquered cities of Canaan, possibly a tributary of the Canaanite royal city of Makkedah, which was settled by the Tribe of Judah.

According to the Midrash Genesis Rabbah, Naamah was also the wife of Noah, who is not named in the Bible. However, the 17th century Bible scholar John Gill deduced evidence that the name of Ham's wife was something like "Naamah", and had possibly been confounded with that of Noah's wife, who was "Emzara" according to other sources.

Fiction

In the Kushiel's Legacy saga by Jacqueline Carey, Naamah is one of seven angels who left the One God to follow Elua, the misbegotten son of Yeshua and the Magdalene. Naamah is one of two female angels, and her domain is that of sexuality. Servants of Naamah are prostitutes who bear marques (a specific type of tattoo) on their backs as a sign of their trade. The most elite of these are the adepts of the Night Court; one of the most famous is anguissette Phèdre nó Delaunay. Naamah's province in Terre d'Ange is Namarre.
