From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Stéphane Henchoz (born September 7, 1974 in Billens, Switzerland) is a Swiss international footballer who is a defender currently playing for Wigan Athletic in the Premiership. He has been capped 60 times and played for his country at Euro 2004.
At Liverpool, Henchoz was a regular member of the first team, forming an effective defensive partnership with Sami Hyypiä. This partnership was an important part of Liverpool's historic cup treble in 2001, although it was Henchoz's handball in the 90th minute of the League Cup Final against Birmingham that led to extra time (although the match itself was only settled on penalties).
Injury then saw him replaced at centre back by the Croatian midfielder Igor Biscan, although Rafael Benitez, on replacing Houllier as team manager, opted to try the English versatile defender Jamie Carragher (who prior to that point played mainly at full back). Carragher was a revelation at centre back and Henchoz consequently joined Celtic for free on a six-month contract. However, on the expiration of this contract, Henchoz opted to try his luck with Wigan Athletic, who have just been promoted.
