Elena Poniatowska (born May 19, 1932 in Paris, France as Héléne Elizabeth Louise Amelie Paula Dolores Poniatowska Amor) is a Mexican journalist and author. She is known for her 1971 work La noche de Tlatelolco (published in English as Massacre in Mexico), in which she relates her interviews with survivors and families of those who died in the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre in Mexico City.
Early life
Elena Poniatowska was born in Paris to Jean Evremont Poniatowski Sperry and Dolores Amor. Her father was a Polish nobleman who was direct descendant of King Stanislaus II of Poland, the last king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Elena fled France with her mother from World War II. The family settled at Mexico City. In 1949 Elena was sent to study to the United States. She returned to Mexico in 1953 and started her career as journalist working for the notable Mexican newspaper Excélsior.
